Chinese-Week at Kirschgarten Grammar School, Basel

GymnasiumKirschgartenInnenhof

This is an offer for students of normal pace classes at Kirschgarten highschool. During a one week course at the Confucius Institute, they will not only have the opportunity to learn about Chinese language, culture and history, but also about modern China. Under the guidance of our institute’s experts, the students can practice Chinese calligraphy as well. The problems and challenges of modern China will also be addressed. For this purpose, China expert Prof. Dr. Ralph Weber, assistant professor at the Institute for Global European Studies in Basel, will hold a lecture. Not only will the students be able to benefit from current expert opinions about China, but they will also be invited to directly participate and ask their own questions.

In the following stay in China, the students will live on the campus of one the most prestigious Chinese universities (ECNU) and get an insight into the lessons of a high school in Shanghai. In addition, they will explore the main attractions of the 23 million city that is Shanghai and get to know even more about Chinese culture, as well as Chinese food. A visit to a historical water city in the outskirts of Shanghai is also scheduled.

Principal Jürg Bauer’s words on his students‘ stay in Shanghai:

“Visiting Shanghai offers our about 16-year-old students the unique possibility to view into a culture that is as fascinating as it is different from our European one.

Especially the impressions gathered during their stay in a school in Shanghai are very valuable. In the same time, the project motivates our students to deal with the Chinese language, usually for the first time, making the memory of this experience last long after finishing school.”

Mother of a Student:

“I am sure that my son will remember this trip for a long time. It will be a highlight of his time in highschool.”

Mandy Schiele, teacher:

“The trip to Shanghai was not only a great experience for our student, but also for the teachers. The program equally balanced social, cultural and educational topics: Everyone was able to profit from this intercultural exchange. I am sure our students will keep this trip in good memory and I hope many more projects like this one will follow.”
