Directors from CIUB in a Special Event: An Intimate Contact with Chinese Calligraphy

May 19, 2017 witnessed the two directors, Qi Zhu-Ammann and Dai Lan, from Confucius Institute at the University of Basel participating a special event in Secondary school De Wette. To the pupils, it was an amazing introduction and perception of the precious tools (the Four Treasures) for Chinese calligraphy.

Newly designed in the curriculum since this semester, the introducing and practicing of the Chinese calligraphy opens up a new chapter in the school teaching. And various beautiful holders made by the students themselves for the Four Treasures indicate the enormous enthusiasm from the students to the traditional Chinese culture.

During the event, director Zhu Qi’s demonstration of using the Chinese brush and the explanation of the strokes of specific Chinese characters became the focus of students’ attention. After their attentive practicing, students also learned to apply seals to mark their very first calligraphy works, requesting and using their Chinese names.

This activity, by means of Chinese calligraphy, brings students the charm of Chinese characters, stimulating their curiosity to further explore Chinese culture.
